The question is whether the food industry (manufacturers and suppliers), particularly procurement and supply (chain) management, is sufficiently aware of the supply issues. And if so, whether any action is being taken. The recent Anuga Cologne Food Fair serves as a good barometer for this. At the largest European trade fair for food and beverages in Cologne, a thousand buyers, suppliers, and service providers come together. One of them is Egemen Levent, director of LVNT Logistics. According to Levent, climate change and its effects on the agricultural sector were not a main topic. “However, there was discussion about changing harvest seasons. This has significant consequences for logistics and storage of products, as the delivery of fresh products is becoming increasingly unpredictable.” The rising food prices, particularly the increasing fluctuations and sharp price hikes, were discussed in the corridors of the fair. “This directly impacts the cost of living and can, of course, affect access to good food,” said Levent.
